The NER is the regulatory authority for the electricity supply industry in South Africa. The NER was established on 1 April 1995, as the successor to the Electricity Control Board. NER is in the process of transforming itself into the National Energy Regulator, with responsibility not only for electricity but also for regulation of the oil and gas sub-sectors. As it works through the organizational changes, NER’s responsibility to consumers will increase as well. AED assisted NER in developing a robust and effective customer service department, able to address consumers’ concerns about the South African energy sector.
