The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) is growing world-wide as a consequence of war, internal conflict and natural disasters. Numbering in the millions, IDPs are forced to settle in other regions of their own country or in neighboring countries. IDPs that move into other countries are classified as refugees. One of the first issues IDPs/refugees face is meeting their fuel requirements for cooking and heating purposes. The need for firewood puts tremendous pressure on local environments and the collection of firewood can put IDPs in risky situations with regards to their safety. To address this problem, USAID and other donors have funded Fuel Efficient Stoves (FES) programs in IDP camps. This desk study will review the literature on FES programs in IDP settings in Northern Uganda and Darfur (or Eastern Chad) and other locations, and will be used to design a more detailed FES assessment.
