Raising and Educating Healthy Boys

Location: North AmericaUnited States
Duration: This project is no longer active.

Raising and Educating Healthy Boys is a project designed to increase the awareness of educators and parents regarding the impact that gender expectations can have on boys, and to consider the implications for childrearing and educational practice at the early childhood level. The project’s goal is to foster a more successful school experience for boys. In its initial phase, the project conducted a series of focus groups with teachers and parents to document awareness and to brainstorm about potential strategies regarding this issue.

The Project held a strategic planning meeting with researchers and educators nationwide, produced a publication, "Raising and Educating Healthy Boys: A Report on the Growing Crisis in Boys’ Education," and conducted a roundtable discussion with funders and concerned individuals. Next steps include: conducting a critical literature of current research, developing preservice early childhood teacher education materials, convening a national learning institute, and pursuing a social marketing campaign.
